The Duval UDL will begin its high school expansion efforts this week at William M. Raines High School. Our goal is to introduce novice debaters in middle school to high school through an intense learning experience. Many of last year’s debaters are encouraged to attend. Especially those who attend the feeder schools surrounding William M. Raines High School. Raines is a historic learning institution in the black community, a pillar of education for local residents in Duval County.

We are proud to have the support of principal George Maxey. He is destined to restore the rich tradition and kinship that once catapulted Raines to national status. But he will need the support of alumni who formerly attended this historic institution. To recommend a child in middle or high school for the Duval Urban Debate Summer Camp at Raines from August 2nd – 6th, click here.

10th Reflection, An Open Letter to My Debaters Past, Present, and Future
by Dr. Ede Warner, Jr – Louisville Professor of Affirmative Action

The costs of white privileged forms of competition were that the quality and truth of arguments really didn’t matter, so when I wrote great arguments about racial issues, the techne and arugment strategies of the game allowed those arguments to be ignored or dismissed in the evaluation process. None of this was inviting to African American students interested in using debate as a training ground to become a better advocate for their desire to address the problems of the black community through logical, reasoned, advocacy training. So I struggled to make good on my promise to use debate as a tool of empowerment for African Americans.

“If the 6.2 million dropouts were all educated and gainfully employed, the economic attraction of the United States to would-be undocumented aliens would plunge. As it is, 69 percent of black dropouts are unemployed; and, the corresponding percentages for whites and Hispanics is 54 and 47, respectfully. The report attributed the oddity of the lowest rate for Hispanics to the fact that many illegal immigrants included in that category compete successfully for jobs with native-born youths.

There is no better investment in the United States at present than high schools targeting high school dropouts for enrollment and graduation.
