“Top 32” Schools Announced in Bickel & Brewer / NYU International Public Policy Forum

November 12, 2009 – The Bickel & Brewer Foundation and New York University have announced the “Top 32” teams who will take part in the 2009-2010 International Public Policy Forum (IPPF). These schools were chosen from hundreds of debate teams that submitted a qualifying round essay on the 2009-10 IPPF topic, “Resolved: The United Nations should substantially increase humanitarian assistance for persons living in poverty.”

These essays were reviewed by an Essay Review Committee, which determined the Top 32 teams based on the overall quality of each 2,800-word qualifying round essay. The top 32 schools now begin a single-elimination written debate competition. The schools will square off in individual debates, with one school writing in the affirmative and one in the negative.

Judges will review the papers in the order they are presented and vote for the winning school. This format continues for several rounds until the final eight schools are announced. The final eight schools left standing will earn an all-expenses-paid trip to the IPPF Finals in New York City in April 2010, and the opportunity to win the $10,000 grand prize. At the IPPF Finals, the debaters will have the opportunity to supplement their written scholarship with oral advocacy.
